ESC: Flash Fire Exposure

A service provider was preparing for hot oiling operations by attempting to ignite the pilot burner. After several unsuccessful ignition attempts, the operator increased the fuel flow going to the pilot causing a buildup of unignited propane.

When ignition did not occur, the operator looked directly into the firebox to check for a spark from the igniter assembly. While positioned in front of the firebox, the operator simultaneously pressed the ignition button. This action resulted in a flash fire within the firebox causing the operator to sustain facial burns.
