Safety in Decommissioning

Susan Mackenzie has over 30 years of experience in health and safety risk management across a wide range of UK sectors, including construction and major hazard industries such as mining, chemicals, and the onshore and offshore energy sectors. She previously served as Head of the Energy Division at the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and has contributed extensively to industry collaboration, including serving as a board member of Step Change in Safety and as a member of its Major Accident Hazards Workgroup.

Susan is currently the Corporate Head of Safety, Safeguards and Quality at Sellafield Ltd, the UK’s largest nuclear decommissioning and waste management organisation. In this role, she leads a broad portfolio that includes fire safety, radiation protection, conventional health and safety, contractor management, and workforce capability across operations, major projects, and corporate functions.

She is passionate about embedding health and safety within wider corporate risk management frameworks and champions it as a strategic enabler that supports the delivery of safe, sustainable, and cost-effective outcomes for customers and stakeholders. Susan has led a number of initiatives focused on innovation, simplification, and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy, helping to strengthen organisational processes, culture, and performance.

Susan is a strong advocate for developing the potential of the workforce, actively engaging people in continuous improvement and fostering a positive, proactive safety culture.

With over 20 years’ experience in health, safety and environment (HSE), Dom has worked across decommissioning, construction and operational projects in both onshore and offshore energy, as well as major accident hazard sectors. His overarching philosophy is to enable people to succeed safely.

He is currently HSE Lead at Three60 Energy, focusing on the safe, efficient and effective decommissioning of the BP Andrew installation. Prior to this, he supported Spirit Energy on decommissioning projects in the Irish Sea and Southern North Sea.

Earlier in his career, Dom held a range of HSE, operations and compliance roles across the UK, Canada and the Netherlands. He began his career as an Inspector with the UK Health and Safety Executive, gaining broad insight across multiple industries, including construction and demolition.

With 45 years in the demolition and decommissioning industry, Steve Andrew, RVA Group’s technical and business development, has built a high-level, multinational career spanning oil and gas, petrochemicals, power and steelworks. He worked his way up through operational roles, holding senior positions at companies including Westcrofts, Cleveland Dismantling before moving into consultancy Eutech (ICI), ABB and ERM providing strategic global decommissioning support across a range of high-hazard sectors. Steve joined RVA Group in March 2024, bringing extensive expertise in asset closure and project management. 

His career highlights include winning 10 RoSPA Gold Awards on a single project, serving on the boards of the Institute of Demolition Engineers and Decom Mission, and being granted a fellowship by the Institute of Demolition Engineers and elected onto the Council of Management. Now driving RVA’s global business development, Steve combines technical knowledge with commercial insight to expand the company’s market presence, while supporting operations and project teams in delivering safe, efficient, and cost-effective decommissioning solutions worldwide. 

With over 21 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry, Stuart has worked across both onshore and offshore environments, with the majority of his career spent in offshore HSE operational roles and onshore HSE advisor positions. He has extensive experience in decommissioning, having spent eight years supporting decommissioning projects, alongside work on UK COMAH sites and offshore operations in West Africa.

He provides a broad range of health, safety, environment and security (HSES) guidance and support to UK business unit operations teams, helping to ensure assets and projects remain compliant with relevant legislation throughout their lifecycle.

His experience includes conducting detailed reviews of contractor policies and procedures to ensure alignment with operational and HSE expectations, as well as proactively assessing contractor performance through audits and offshore site inspections.

He is passionate about delivering decommissioning activities safely and efficiently, with a strong focus on achieving cost-effective outcomes.
